Screening and Selection
Solvias Polymorphism ProgramThe aim of a polymorphism program is to search for, identify and characterize new polymorphic forms, hydrates and solvates of a substance and to understand the relationship among the different solid phases.
The polymorphic or pseudopolymorphic form of an active ingredient can influence its bioavailability, stability, processability and ease of manufacture. It is therefore of utmost importance to choose the ‘right’ polymorphic form for biological, technological, economic and regulatory reasons.
A sound knowledge of the polymorphism of a substance can lead to a significant strengthening of a patent position and may be very useful for patent life cycle management.
In order to optimize the experimental effort, our strategy is to use the appropriate experiments according to the specific question and stage of development of the active ingredient at which the polymorph search is carried out.
Solvias Salt Program
The aim of a salt program, i.e., salt screening and salt selection, is to screen for crystalline salts of a compound and to select the best candidate(s) for further development.
This selection is based on, among other considerations, physical and chemical parameters such as stability, solubility, hygroscopicity, ease of preparation and number of polymorphic forms.
Since dozens of possible counterions and crystallization methods and an almost infinite number of solvent systems and crystallization conditions are possible, experience and specialized know-how are required in order to obtain crystalline forms of substances that are hard to crystallize. At Solvias we have decades of experience in crystallization.
